One of the important decisions a Muslim makes in his life is marriage. It will affect your faith, your house, your family and your future. So, it only makes sense to seek Allah’s advice before you accept or reject a proposal. The Prophet’s ﷺ manner of doing this is by making istikhara dua for marriage. Learn how to pray it, the whole dua in Arabic, transliteration and English, and dispel common misconceptions about istikhara and marriage in this tutorial.

What Is Istikhara for Marriage?

Allahumma inni astakheeruka bi’ilmik — “O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge.”

Istikhara implies asking Allah to guide you to the finest. The Prophet ﷺ taught this dua to his companions for every topic they are uncertain about, and marriage is one of the most prevalent reasons to resort to it. When you make dua for istikhara in marriage, you are saying that you don’t know what the future holds and asking the One who knows all to pick what is best for your deen, your life and your akhirah.

The istikhara dua for marriage is the same dua that is utilised for any decision. You say it, and you refer to a certain proposal or person. The thing to which you refer is peculiar to marriage.

The Sunnah Steps Before You Pray Istikhara

Itha ja’akum man tardawna deenahu wa khuluqahu fa-ankihuh — “If someone whose religion and character you are pleased with comes to you, then marry him.” (Tirmidhi)

Istikhara is to be done with your own efforts as well. Do the foundation the Sunnah recommends before praying:

  1. Get to know the person. Ask about their personality, religious devotion and the way they treat other people.
  2. Get some advice from individuals you trust. Consult relatives, elders and those who knew the person well. Seeking guidance (mashwarah) is part of the Sunnah.
  3. Engage the guardian (wali). Keep the family informed and involved as appropriate.
  4. Then do istikhara. Do your share, and then turn to Allah.

It is not a shortcut to these stages, nor an instrument of fortune-telling. It is a prayer to Allah to guide your decision and to make the right way clear.

How to Pray Salatul Istikhara for Marriage

Allahumma inni astaqdiruka biqudratik, wa as’aluka min fadlikal-‘atheem — “O Allah, I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You for Your great bounty.”

The approach is easy to use:

  1. Perform wudhu.
  2. Pray two voluntary (nafl) rakats with the aim of istikhara. There are several experts who say that the recitation of Surah al-Kafirun in the first rakat and Surah al-Ikhlas in the second is recommended but not obligatory.
  3. After the salam, praise Allah, shower blessings on the Prophet ﷺ and recite the istikhara dua below.
  4. Say “this matter” (hatha al-amr) and think on your marital decision, or mention its name.
  5. Live your life and see how it turns out.

This is the text narrated by Imam Bukhari from Jabir ibn Abdullah (May Allah be pleased with him). It is the same istikhara dua in Arabic that is utilised for all decisions, including marriage.

Istikhara Dua for Marriage Transliteration

If you cannot yet read Arabic script, here is the transliteration to help you recite:

Allahumma inni astakheeruka bi’ilmika, wa astaqdiruka biqudratika, wa as’aluka min fadlikal-‘atheem, fa innaka taqdiru wa la aqdir, wa ta’lamu wa la a’lam, wa anta ‘allamul-ghuyoob.

Allahumma in kunta ta’lamu anna hathal-amra khayrun li fi deeni wa ma’aashi wa ‘aqibati amri, faqdurhu li wa yassirhu li, thumma barik li feeh.

Wa in kunta ta’lamu anna hathal-amra sharrun li fi deeni wa ma’aashi wa ‘aqibati amri, fasrifhu ‘anni wasrifni ‘anhu, waqdur liyal-khayra haythu kana, thumma ardini bih.

Transliteration might be a bridge as you are learning Arabic. If you listen to a reciter, it will help you get the tougher sounds right.

Istikhara Dua for Marriage in English

Wa anta ‘allamul-ghuyoob — “And You are the Knower of the unseen.”

Here is the entire English wording of the Istikhara prayer that you would say before deciding on marriage:

“O Allah, I seek Your guidance by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You for Your great bounty. You have power, and I have none. You know, and I know not. You are the Knower of the unseen.

O Allah, if in Your knowledge this marriage is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then decree it for me, make it easy for me, and bless me in it.

And if, in Your knowledge, this marriage is bad for me in my religion, my livelihood, and the outcome of my affairs, then turn it away from me and turn me away from it, and decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”

See what you’re truly asking. You’re not asking for what you want. You are asking for the best result and the satisfaction of accepting it.

How Will I Know the Answer After Istikhara?

Allahumma-qdur liyal-khayra haythu kan, thumma ardini bih — “O Allah, decree for me what is good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.”

This is the question people ask the most. A few things to think about:

  • No need for a dream. Some people experience a dream; however, there is nothing in the Sunnah that makes a dream the expected answer, and a dream alone should not be considered a ruling.
  • Not only the feeling, but also look at the road. See how it all unfolds. Is it smooth sailing, or are you continually hitting roadblocks? With a peaceful spirit, ease may be a sign that Allah is opening the path. Repeated difficulties may mean the opposite.
  • Don’t mistake the desire for the answer. Strong attraction or strong hatred can make you read the result before istikhara in a clouded way. “Bring an open heart to the prayer.”
  • You can do it again. Many scholars allow you to repeat the istikhara over a number of days if you are still hesitant; there is no legitimate prescribed number of times.
  • Continue to consult. Istikhara is not a substitute for consulting sincere, knowledgeable people.

Common Misunderstandings About Marriage Istikhara

Rabbi inni lima anzalta ilayya min khayrin faqeer — “My Lord, I am in need of whatever good You send down to me.” (Quran 28:24)

Several misconceptions regarding istikhara produce confusion and occasional pressure:

  • “Istikhara will tell me yes or no. It is a request for help, not a promise of a message. Allah guides by situation and the state of your heart.
  • “Get someone else to pray it for me and tell me what happens.” Istikhara is a personal practice. You can ask others to do dua for you, but the decision and the prayer are up to you.
  • “A bad dream means marriage is doomed. Fears and concerns often influence the dreams.” Don’t make big decisions based on a dream alone.
  • “If I do istikhara, I have to go with my gut.” Your feelings are a factor. Use them with discernment, character and religious commitment.

Dua for a Righteous Spouse and a Blessed Marriage

Rabbana hab lana min azwajina wa thurriyyatina qurrata a’yunin waj’alna lilmuttaqeena imama — “Our Lord, grant us spouses and offspring who bring us comfort to our eyes, and make us leaders for the righteous.” (Quran 25:74)

Istikhara is one of numerous supplications you can make during this period. Along with it, ask Allah for a partner who will help you in your faith and a marriage filled with mercy and calm. The preceding Quranic dua is a great one to repeat consistently whether you are still looking, contemplating a proposal or already engaged.

Final Thoughts

Istikhara Dua For Marriage Is Not a Magic Shortcut. It’s an act of faith. You do your part by trying to learn about the person, to seek guidance, and to deliberate carefully, and then you deliver the final decision to Allah, who knows what you do not. Perform the two rakats, recite the dua with understanding and take what He makes easy. If it’s a good marriage for you, pray that He will bless it. If not, ask Him to turn you from it and fill your heart with contentment.

Frequently Asked Questions
